Milliman Study: Health Plans Poised to Save $19 Billion by Migrating Administrative Transactions Online

A Milliman study, published in May 2010, highlights the sizable potential for health plans to realize significant administrative cost reductions through the adoption of electronic transactions amounting to $19 billion annually. The study points out that such savings can be achieved via the migration of key transactions such as claim submissions, authorization and referrals, and eligibility verifications, online. The report further establishes that efforts to increase use of electronic eligibility verification and prior authorization hold the greatest promise for health plans.

As many of you already know, healthcare providers, hospitals and health plans need to comply with an updated version of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (most commonly known by the abbreviation ICD-10) by October 1, 2013. As a prerequisite to the ICD-10 compliance, healthcare organizations also need to adopt updated electronic transaction standards, known as HIPAA 5010, by January 1, 2012.
